Keyword research starts before the search-volume column
Useful keyword research connects customer language with a distinct question, a suitable page and a business reason to answer it. Search-volume and difficulty estimates help compare opportunities, but they do not predict enquiries. Combine them with current results, existing Search Console evidence and what prospective clients actually ask.
Put the advice into practice
Ongoing SEO, with a clear job to do
Find the search gaps, improve the right pages and review what produces useful enquiries.
Plan your search prioritiesWhere should the research begin?
Start with the work the business wants to do, the people who need it and the decisions those people face. A professional-services firm may need fewer enquiries with better scope, while a publication may value a much larger readership. The same keyword list cannot serve those goals equally well.
Collect the language from approved enquiry notes, discovery conversations, proposals and the website’s current search data. Use customer information responsibly and remove identifying details from research documents that do not need them. The aim is to recognise questions, not to publish private conversations.
What belongs in a useful research sheet?
| Field | What to record |
|---|---|
| Question and audience | The task and the person facing it. |
| Query and market | The exact phrase, country and language checked. |
| Demand evidence | The provider estimate or actual Search Console observation, with the date and source. |
| Current results | The kinds of pages answering the question and the useful gaps. |
| Page fit | The existing URL to improve or a genuinely distinct new purpose. |
| Business connection | The relevant service and the next useful reader action. |
How would you use that sheet for one service?
Take a hypothetical business offering annual report design. “Annual report design” may support a service page. “How to brief an annual report designer” supports a practical planning article. “Accessible annual report PDF” raises a separate question about document production and testing.
The broad service query can remain important even if it is competitive. The narrower questions may offer opportunities to demonstrate expertise and help a prospect prepare. Their role is not merely to funnel everyone to a contact form. Each article needs to answer its own question well enough to be useful independently.
Check whether the current annual report guide already addresses a proposed topic. If it does, strengthen that section or create a separate detailed resource only when the reader needs more depth than the guide can reasonably provide.
What can search-volume estimates tell you?
They can help compare the relative size and seasonality of query opportunities within a provider’s dataset. Record which market and period the figure represents. A global estimate and an Australian estimate answer different planning questions.
A provider’s zero estimate does not establish that nobody asks the question. Very specific service questions may fall below its reporting threshold. Equally, a high estimate can include audiences with little connection to the business. Review relevance and intent before treating volume as a priority.
Do not add closely related keyword estimates together as if they represent entirely different people. The same searcher can use several variations, and provider groupings can overlap. Keep estimates labelled as estimates throughout planning.
How does Search Console change the picture?
Google Search Console provides observations about the website’s presence in search. It can reveal which pages and queries already have visibility. That is different from estimating the total demand across an entire market.
Review a page and its relevant queries together. An impression without a click may reflect a low position, an unsuitable result presentation, a question answered within search or another factor. It is a reason to investigate the context, not an automatic instruction to replace the title.
How should you choose what to publish first?
Choose a mix of strategically important subjects and specific questions where the business can give a particularly useful answer. Consider the evidence available, production effort and the relationship with existing pages. Keep a clear reason for each selection.
Move from the sheet to a content brief with a question, boundaries and source material. Grendesign’s ongoing SEO support connects research with implementation and review, so the list becomes a useful publishing plan.
