Google AI search reporting: turn visibility into useful business decisions
Google’s AI search reporting can help you see which pages are appearing in AI features. The useful next step is to connect that visibility with the questions your customers ask and the enquiries your business can actually serve.
Put the advice into practice
Make your expertise easier to find and understand
Connect useful answers, credible source material and a technically sound website.
Explore AI search optimisation
Discuss your AI search visibilityA bigger impression total is interesting. It is not, by itself, evidence of a better pipeline. Treat the report as one part of your measurement system, then use it to choose a specific page or customer journey worth improving.
What changed in Search Console?
Google announced dedicated Search Generative AI performance reports on 3 June 2026. Its updated announcement says the insights rolled out worldwide on 31 August. The reports cover impressions within generative AI features and allow analysis by pages, countries and dates, with device information for Search. Google also says this visibility remains included in the overall performance report.
That last point matters: don’t add the AI report total to the overall report as though they were separate audiences. Nor does a Google report establish how often your business appears in unrelated AI products.
Start with one commercial question
Before exporting data, finish this sentence: “We want to understand whether people researching ___ can find our useful answer about ___.” A professional-services firm might choose preparing for a first consultation. A manufacturer might choose the difference between two material specifications. An ecommerce business might choose care instructions for a popular product.
This keeps the analysis attached to a real need. Without that boundary, teams tend to celebrate the largest page rather than investigate the most useful one. A high-visibility definition can be valuable, but it may attract students, job seekers and businesses outside your market as well as prospective customers.
Write down the intended audience, the service or product the page supports and the action a satisfied reader might reasonably take. Sometimes that action is another article, not an enquiry. The page should help the visitor complete the task they arrived with before introducing a relevant commercial next step.
Build a small baseline you can explain
Choose a comparison period long enough to smooth out ordinary day-to-day variation for your site. Record the exact dates rather than labelling a screenshot “this month”. If your market is seasonal, note what changed in demand and whether the previous period was comparable.
- List the pages relevant to your chosen customer question.
- Record AI-feature impressions for those pages and the relevant country.
- Keep overall search performance separate, using matching dates where possible.
- Add website visits and validated enquiry events from your analytics system.
- Ask sales whether enquiries associated with the topic were suitable and what those prospects needed.
These records will not always join neatly. Explain the gaps rather than forcing a perfect-looking attribution chain. Someone can encounter your business in search, return directly later and contact you by phone. You may not be able to prove the full path.
Use a four-way interpretation
Visibility and relevant enquiries both rise: investigate what improved, but avoid claiming the content caused every enquiry. Check campaign activity, seasonality and changes to the offer. Preserve the useful material while looking for the next unanswered question.
Visibility rises but useful enquiries do not: review audience fit and the next step. The page might answer an early research question well, reach a different country or leave a suitable buyer unsure what you do. Each explanation suggests different work.
Visibility is modest but the page assists good conversations: keep its commercial role in view. A specialist buying question can be worth answering even when it will never attract a large audience. Ask whether sales actively uses the page.
Both indicators are weak: check whether the question matters to customers, whether the answer is distinctive and whether the page is accessible and connected to related content. Publishing more versions of it is unlikely to resolve a poorly chosen task.
Example: make a service enquiry easier
Imagine an engineering consultancy has a practical page on preparing documents for a site assessment. Its team notices the page appearing in AI reporting, but enquiries often arrive without the information needed to scope the work.
The first response need not be a longer article. The team could add a clear document checklist, explain which items are optional and link to the assessment service. The enquiry form could ask whether the documents are available, without requiring visitors to upload sensitive material immediately.
The testable question becomes: does the clearer preparation guidance help suitable prospects submit a more useful enquiry? Record the change date and review enquiry completeness alongside visits. If there is too little data to judge, say so. The improvement can still make the page more useful, even before its commercial effect is established.
Turn observations into a review queue
For each page, record an observation, a possible explanation, the evidence still missing and one proposed action. “AI impressions increased” is an observation. “Our new paragraph caused the increase” is a hypothesis. Keeping them separate makes the next discussion more productive.
Give each action an owner. A subject specialist may need to verify an answer; a writer may need to clarify its limits; a developer may need to fix a blocked page. Set a review date that fits the traffic and buying cycle rather than expecting a meaningful conclusion the next morning.
A small queue is easier to learn from than a sitewide rewrite. Start with a page that has a clear role, enough evidence to investigate and an improvement you can explain without mentioning an algorithm.
Keep the foundations and the reporting distinct
Grendesign’s SEO and AI search service page includes a Website Search Foundations Check. It checks visible HTML signals on a public page. It does not measure rankings, verify AI citations or replace access to your Search Console and business data.
Use that distinction in your own reporting too. A technical check, a visibility report and a sales review answer different questions. Together they can guide a better decision. None should be presented as a guarantee of the others.
