- Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) About about SEO, AEO and GEO
Your website now needs to work for two audiences: people who may become customers, and systems that read, summarise and recommend online content. Search traffic is falling because more questions are answered before a website visit happens. The businesses still getting noticed provide direct answers, publish useful facts and make the next step easy.
Why is Google sending fewer clicks to websites?
In June 2026, SparkToro published an analysis showing that 68.01% of US Google searches made between January and April ended without a click.
That means fewer than one in three searches led to any website, Google property or paid result.
The study used US browser data from Similarweb, so it should not be treated as an Australian benchmark. It does show where search behaviour is heading.
Google now answers many questions inside the search results through AI Overviews, maps, featured snippets, product listings and other search features. People can often get what they need without opening another page.
Seer Interactive has also studied the effect of AI Overviews on click-through rates. Its 2026 research reports that organic click-through rates were 67% lower when a brand was not cited in the AI Overview.
If your organic traffic has softened during 2026, even though your rankings and website have not changed much, zero-click search may be part of the reason.
Are fewer website visitors always bad for business?
No. A smaller audience can still produce more enquiries if the people arriving are closer to making a decision.
Someone who reaches your website through an AI-generated recommendation may have already:
- researched the service
- compared several options
- checked common prices
- narrowed down the location
- read a summary of your business
When they visit your website, they may be looking for confirmation rather than general information.
Google says people who click from search pages containing AI Overviews tend to spend more time on the websites they visit. Adobe Analytics also found that AI-referred US retail shoppers generated 53% more revenue per visit in May 2026 than visitors from other sources.
Retail data will not apply equally to every Australian business, especially service providers. The broader point still matters. AI referral traffic may be small, but it can carry stronger buying intent.
Fewer visitors can still produce good results when more of them are ready to enquire, book or buy.
Why do generic website pages get ignored?
Search and answer systems need facts they can verify and repeat.
A service page that says a business provides “tailored solutions with a client-first approach” gives them very little to work with. It does not explain:
- what the business actually does
- who the service suits
- where the service is available
- what it costs
- how long it takes
- what makes the offer different
Compare that with a page stating:
We create branded pitch decks for Australian businesses and usually deliver the first draft within five working days. Our presentation design packages start from $X and include X rounds of changes.
That answer contains a service, location, timeframe, starting price and clear terms. A person can understand it quickly. Google, ChatGPT, Gemini and other answer systems can also quote it without guessing.
Good website copy has always relied on clarity and proof. Search systems now make the cost of vague writing much easier to see.
How can you improve your website for SEO, AEO and GEO?
SEO helps your pages appear in conventional search results. Answer Engine Optimisation, or AEO, helps your content answer specific questions clearly. Generative Engine Optimisation, or GEO, helps systems such as ChatGPT, Gemini and Google AI features understand and reference your business.
All three depend on strong website content and sound technical SEO.
Google confirms that websites do not need special “AI schema” or separate machine-readable files to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode. The usual foundations still count: indexable pages, internal links, helpful written content, accurate structured data and a good page experience.
Here are four changes worth making before the end of 2026.
1. Does each important page answer the main question immediately?
Put the clearest answer near the top of the page.
A visitor should not have to scroll through your history, mission and credentials before finding out whether you provide the service they need.
For example, a commercial cleaning page could begin with:
We provide ongoing commercial cleaning for offices, medical practices and shared workspaces across Sydney, with services available after hours and on weekends.
That opening quickly establishes the service, customer type, location and availability.
Use the rest of the page to explain how the service works, what is included and why someone should choose you.
2. Have you included details competitors cannot easily copy?
Add facts that come directly from your business.
Useful details may include:
- starting prices or typical price ranges
- project timeframes
- minimum order or project sizes
- delivery areas
- suburbs, cities and regions serviced
- industries you know well
- team size and qualifications
- what is included and excluded
- warranties, guarantees or support periods
- original results, examples and customer data
Australian businesses should also make their location information consistent across their website, Google Business Profile and trusted directories.
If you work across the Mornington Peninsula, Melbourne, Sydney or several Australian regions, explain where each service is available. Do not add suburb names to a page simply to rank for them. Include useful local information that helps someone decide whether you can serve them.
3. When did you last check your most important pages?
Old information weakens trust.
Choose the ten pages most closely connected to leads and revenue. Review them every quarter for:
- outdated services or prices
- incorrect staff information
- old statistics
- broken links
- missing examples
- changed service areas
- vague sections that need a direct answer
- new questions customers regularly ask
Do not change a page merely to give it a recent date. Add something useful, correct information that has changed or explain the topic more clearly.
4. Is the next step obvious to a visitor who is ready to act?
A warmer visitor usually needs reassurance and a clear next step.
Remove competing calls to action from your main service pages. Decide what you want someone to do next, such as:
- request a quote
- book a consultation
- call your team
- check availability
- complete an assessment
- view relevant work
Support that action with the information someone needs before committing. This may include pricing guidance, turnaround times, service areas, examples, testimonials or answers to common concerns.
Long homepages built around general persuasion can frustrate people who already know what they want. Make the important information easy to find.
Can you measure traffic from AI Overviews and AI search?
Only partly.
Google includes clicks from AI Overviews and AI Mode within the overall Web performance data in Google Search Console. It does not provide a clean report that separates those clicks from ordinary Google results.
Traffic from services such as ChatGPT and Perplexity may appear as referral traffic in GA4. If someone copies a link from a chat and opens it separately, the visit may be recorded as direct traffic because the original referral information is lost.
This makes session numbers less useful when viewed alone.
Track:
- qualified enquiries
- website conversion rate
- revenue per session
- branded Google searches
- calls and form submissions
- landing pages used by new leads
- lead quality by source
- answers to “How did you hear about us?”
If organic clicks fall while qualified enquiries remain steady, your website may be losing casual visitors while keeping serious buyers.
Does your website need to be rebuilt for AI search?
Usually, no.
For many Australian businesses, the first job is improving the content and structure of the existing website. Adding useful details to five important pages can have a bigger effect than changing the entire design.
A rebuild may be justified when the website:
- hides important information inside long pages
- has confusing navigation
- performs poorly on mobile
- loads slowly
- cannot support structured content
- makes services or locations difficult to understand
- sends visitors through too many steps before they can enquire
The decision should come from the site’s performance and limitations, not from a fear that every business suddenly needs an “AI-ready website”.
What would Grendesign change first?
We would start with the pages closest to revenue.
That usually means the home page, main service pages, location pages, pricing information and contact path. We would check what people search for, what customers ask before buying and what information is missing from the current site.
From there, we can improve the content for conventional SEO, direct answers and generative search without stripping out the brand’s personality.
Grendesign provides SEO, AEO and GEO services for Australian businesses, along with website design, development, content, analytics and conversion tracking. We work with businesses across the Mornington Peninsula, Melbourne, Sydney and Australia.
If your website traffic has changed during 2026, we can help you work out what is happening and where the best opportunities sit.

Frequently asked questions
Does SEO still matter when Google answers questions without a click?
Yes. Google uses its existing search systems to find pages and supporting links for AI Overviews and AI Mode. Strong technical SEO, clear content, internal links and trusted business information remain important.
What is the difference between SEO, AEO and GEO?
SEO improves visibility in standard search results. AEO structures content to answer specific questions. GEO helps generative search systems understand, cite and recommend a business. They work best together.
How do I make my website easier for AI search systems to understand?
Use clear headings, answer questions directly and publish accurate details about your services, prices, locations, timeframes and experience. Keep important information in written text rather than hiding it inside images or PDFs.
Do I need special schema for AI Overviews?
No. Google says there is no special schema required for AI Overviews or AI Mode. Any structured data used on the website should accurately match the information visitors can see on the page.
How often should website content be updated?
Review high-value pages every three months. Update them when prices, services, staff, statistics, examples, locations or customer questions change. Avoid making empty changes simply to alter the publication date.
How can a local Australian business improve its AI search visibility?
Publish clear service areas, accurate contact details and useful location-specific information. Keep your website, Google Business Profile and trusted directory listings consistent. Explain what you offer in each region rather than repeating the same page with different suburb names.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) About about SEO, AEO and GEO
Is Google sending fewer people to business websites in 2026?
Yes. SparkToro found that 68.01% of US Google searches made between January and April 2026 ended without a click. This is US data rather than an Australian benchmark, but it shows a clear shift towards search results that answer questions directly through AI Overviews, maps, snippets and other Google features.
Do Google AI Overviews reduce website traffic?
AI Overviews can reduce organic clicks because people may receive an answer without visiting a website. Seer Interactive reported that organic click-through rates were 67% lower when a brand was not cited in the AI Overview. Businesses that are clearly named or cited have a better chance of retaining visibility and attracting interested visitors.
Does SEO still work in the age of AI search?
Yes. SEO remains the foundation of visibility in Google Search, AI Overviews and AI Mode. Google uses its existing search systems to find and assess supporting pages. A website still needs indexable content, useful internal links, accurate information, good performance and clear answers before it can appear in AI-assisted search results.
What is the difference between SEO, AEO and GEO?
SEO helps a website rank in conventional search results. Answer Engine Optimisation, or AEO, makes content easier to use as a direct answer. Generative Engine Optimisation, or GEO, helps platforms such as ChatGPT, Gemini and Google’s AI features understand, cite and recommend a business. Strong websites use all three together.
What type of website content is most likely to be quoted by AI?
AI search systems are more likely to use content that provides a clear, factual and self-contained answer. Useful details include prices, timeframes, locations, service inclusions, qualifications, original statistics and direct answers to common customer questions. Generic claims such as “quality service” or “tailored solutions” provide little information worth quoting.
Can a business guarantee that ChatGPT or Google will quote its website?
No business or agency can guarantee a citation in ChatGPT, Gemini, Google AI Overviews or another answer engine. Visibility depends on the question, available sources, search systems and the information published across the web. Clear content, strong SEO, accurate business details and independent mentions can improve the chance of being included.
Does a website need special AI schema to appear in Google AI Overviews?
No. Google states that websites do not need special AI schema, new machine-readable files or separate AI pages to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode. Existing structured data should accurately match the content visible on the page. Schema can clarify business information, but it cannot guarantee a ranking, recommendation or citation.
Does an Australian business need a new website for AI search?
Usually not. Many Australian businesses can improve their visibility by rewriting key service pages, adding direct answers, publishing real business details and simplifying the enquiry path. A rebuild may be needed when the existing website is slow, difficult to navigate, poorly structured or unable to support useful written content.
How can a local Australian business appear in AI recommendations?
A local business should clearly publish its services, address, service areas, opening hours, contact details and customer types. These details should match its Google Business Profile and trusted directory listings. Genuine reviews, local case studies and pages containing useful regional information can also help search systems understand where the business operates.
Should businesses publish their prices online?
Publishing a starting price, typical range or clear pricing method helps customers decide whether a service suits them. It also gives search and answer systems a useful fact they can reference. When a fixed price is not possible, explain which factors affect the quote rather than leaving visitors with no pricing guidance.
How often should important website pages be updated?
High-value service, pricing and location pages should be checked at least every three months. Update them when services, prices, staff, service areas, examples or customer questions change. A page should only be changed when there is something useful to correct or add. Changing the date alone does not improve its value.
How can you measure traffic from ChatGPT and other AI platforms?
Some visits from ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, Gemanai and other platforms appear as referral traffic in GA4. Other visits may be recorded as direct traffic when referral information is missing. Google currently includes AI Overview and AI Mode clicks within general Web performance data in Search Console, so businesses should also track enquiries, conversions, branded searches and lead quality.
Are visitors from AI search more likely to become customers?
They can be. People often use AI tools to research a service, compare options and narrow down providers before visiting a website. This can produce a smaller but better-informed audience. Google has reported that people clicking from search results with AI Overviews tend to spend more time on the websites they visit.
What should a service page include for SEO, AEO and GEO?
A strong service page should explain what the service is, who it is for, where it is available, what it includes, how much it costs and what happens next. It should answer common questions in plain English, show evidence of experience and offer one clear action, such as requesting a quote or booking a consultation.
