An AI answer has your business wrong. Start with the source trail
When an AI answer gives incorrect business information, record the exact answer and inspect the public sources it cites, where available. Correct inaccurate owned pages and legitimate profiles, then use the relevant product’s feedback process. Keep the evidence and timing clear: changing a source improves the source but does not give direct control over every later generated answer.

Discuss your AI search visibilityWhat should you record before changing anything?
Save the question, the product used, the answer, its visible sources and the date. Note whether the issue concerns a factual error, an outdated fact or a subjective recommendation. Those require different responses.
For example, a wrong phone number has a checkable correction. A statement that a business is “the best” is an opinion or recommendation that cannot be resolved by adding the same claim to the website. Focus the initial investigation on facts you can substantiate.
How do you trace the likely source?
Open the cited pages and compare the relevant sentence with the current website. Search for the exact outdated detail in legitimate public profiles and old documents. A citation is a useful lead, but it may not support every part of the generated answer.
Build a small source table rather than trying to change everything at once. Identify the owner of each source and whether the business can edit it directly or needs to request a factual correction.
| Source | Fact to check | Action and evidence |
|---|---|---|
| Owned service page | Current offer and coverage. | Correct the page and verify the public output. |
| Contact page | Official business contact details. | Confirm consistency with authorised channels. |
| Legitimate business profile | Trading identity and operating arrangements. | Update through the platform’s authorised process. |
| Third-party article | A specific outdated statement. | Request a factual correction with supporting evidence. |
What would a focused correction look like?
Imagine a hypothetical firm that has retired one service but still has an old PDF describing it. Its current website explains the new offer, while a directory repeats the PDF’s wording. An AI answer may encounter that inconsistent public record.
The work is to review the PDF’s intended role, update the relevant profile and clarify the current service page. If the old document must remain as an archive, its context should be clear. Repeating the new description on dozens of new pages would add maintenance work without necessarily resolving the contradictory sources.
How should your own facts be presented?
Give the business identity, services, contact routes and delivery coverage clear homes on the website. Use consistent names for the same offer. Where a specialist brand or domain has a different role, explain that relationship accurately.
For an eligible Google Business Profile, the platform’s representation guidelines require accurate business information. Other platforms have their own rules and correction processes, which should be checked before making changes.
What can product feedback accomplish?
Use the product’s available feedback controls to identify the specific error and provide a reliable source where the process permits it. Avoid submitting private client material to prove a claim that can be established with public business information.
Record that feedback was submitted, but keep its outcome separate from the source correction. A later answer can vary with the question, available sources and system behaviour. Rechecking one answer is an observation, not a universal certification of accuracy.
How do you stop the public record drifting again?
Maintain a short company fact sheet with an owner for each fact. Use it when updating profiles, proposals and website sections. Review the sources when the business changes rather than waiting for an inaccurate answer to appear.
Grendesign’s AI search work can connect that source review with clearer website information and an ongoing content plan.
